Don’t Let the Dust Settle

Southport Woman Dusting a ShelfKeeping your Southport home dust-free can be an absolute challenge. This is definitely true since many types of dusters move dust around rather than trapping and actually removing it. Keep this in mind: not only does this waste your time, but it also wastes money! If you want to dust efficiently, you should have the right tools for the job. To see to it that you’re getting the best value for your money, take a closer look at the various types of dusters you can buy and which ones work best for your dustiest jobs.

Feather Dusters

Although they may look impressive, feather dusters aren’t just actually for the rich and fancy. Instead, they make a durable, all-purpose duster that can handle many of your dustiest areas. But it is crucial to use the correct kind. The only feathers that attract dust are ostrich down feathers. Ostrich down feathers are thick and soft and effortlessly capture dust. Although they can be on the somewhat expensive side, feather dusters made of other types of feathers or synthetic materials won’t be as effective. Rather, common and cheap feather dusters will only flick dust around the room where it will settle once again on your furniture just mere moments later.

Wool Dusters

Another natural material that works just as great as a duster is wool. Wool dusters attract and collect dust with static and natural lanolin in the fibers. Wool is also very soft, making it the appropriate material for dusting sensitive surfaces or those that scratch very easily. While wool dusters are not as common as other types of dusters and may be kind of scarce in stores, they are widely available online.

Microfiber Dusters

One of the more inexpensive types of dusters that still work effectively is microfiber dusters. These dusters come in a range of sizes and styles, but they all achieve the same task: removing dust. Microfiber works so well because it is made of tiny filaments that rub together, creating static electricity. This static attracts dust, making dust removal quick and easy. Microfiber is also washable and reusable, making it one of the most economically-friendly dusters around.

There are multiple different styles of microfiber dusters. Some are really just plain and simple hand dusters, with an easy-grip handle that lets you maneuver the duster out of corners and across high shelves. Plenty of these do come with extendable handles to enable you to reach the tops of door frames and photo frames. One of the more creative styles of duster is one created specifically for window blinds. Made with three prongs, this microfiber duster slips very easily between the slats and grabs dust on both sides with every swipe. Another innovative option is the dusting mitt. Made similar to an oven mitt, but with microfiber material, you merely slip the mitt over your hand and wipe down your surfaces.

Disposable Dusters

One popular type of duster is disposable dusting pads. These dusters are made from tiny polyester fibers and rely on static electricity to gather and clean out dust. Both name brand and generic brand dusting pads work the same way and most often come with either dusting kits with a reusable handle or packs of refill pads. Many people like best these dusters because you use them until they are visibly dirty and then throw the pad away.

Compressed Air

One last thing, if you need to dust delicate electronic devices or small crevices, one of the absolute best dusters you can utilize is compressed air. The compressed air comes in cans that you can spray directly onto the area to be dusted, allowing you to blow the dust out safely. You can simply follow up with one of the other types of dusters to remove anything that remains on the item’s surface.
